Morning mist softens a winding footpath on Ball Hill near Okehampton, where sunlight filters through the trees beside an old stone wall.

A narrow footpath meanders along the contours of Ball Hill, just outside Okehampton, following an old stone wall beneath a canopy of twisting branches.

The woodland is still heavy with morning shade, but further along the path, sunlight begins to break through. A little lingering mist softens the distant trees, while patches of light pick out the fallen leaves, exposed roots and uneven ground.

The old stone wall follows the track's curve, partly hidden beneath overhanging branches. On the opposite side, a steep bank rises amongst ferns and tangled undergrowth, giving the path a wonderfully enclosed feel.

What appeals to me about this scene is the way the woodland gradually disappears into the brighter, hazy distance. The path invites you onwards, but the trees conceal whatever might be waiting around the next bend.

It's easy to overlook places like this when you're out walking. A familiar footpath, an old wall and a few trees hardly seem remarkable in themselves.

Yet with the right combination of mist and morning sunlight, even the most ordinary stretch of woodland can take on a character entirely its own.
