Privacy Policy
Last Updated: 30 October 2026
Welcome to RamblingMiles (“the Website”), available at ramblingmiles.com.
RamblingMiles is a personal, non-commercial photography website, created, owned and maintained by Miles Wolstenholme, a hobbyist photographer based in the United Kingdom.
The Website is a personal creative project dedicated to sharing landscape, nature, wildlife and travel photography, alongside articles, walking routes and experiences exploring the British countryside.
RamblingMiles is not operated as a commercial business. Its purpose is to share photography, personal experiences and an appreciation of the natural environment, rather than to generate revenue through advertising, marketing or the commercial exploitation of visitor information.
Your privacy is important. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information may be collected when you use the Website, how that information is used and protected, and your rights under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018 and applicable UK privacy legislation.
We aim to collect only the information reasonably necessary to operate the Website and its features. We do not use website analytics, sell personal information, engage in behavioural advertising or use visitor information for commercial profiling.

If you wish to request the removal of a comment containing your personal information, please contact us.
7. Private Client Galleries and Photograph Feedback
RamblingMiles provides password-protected private galleries for sharing photographs with selected individuals.
These galleries are intended for private photographic viewing, selection and feedback rather than general public access.
Gallery access
Access to a private gallery requires the relevant gallery password.
Visitors do not need to register for a Website account to access a password-protected gallery.
The Website may use secure session information to maintain authorised gallery access during a browsing session.
Gallery passwords should only be shared with their intended recipients.
Photograph selections and feedback
Within a private gallery, visitors may:
Mark photographs as Like or Dislike.
Change or clear previous selections.
Submit written feedback about photographs or the gallery.
Return to the gallery and review previously recorded selections.
Selections and feedback are stored to support the private photographic review process.
They are not published as part of the public Website.
Submitted selections and comments may be viewed by the Website administrator for the purpose of reviewing photographic feedback.
Browser identification
To remember photograph selections between visits, the Website may use a randomly generated first-party browser identifier.
This identifier may be stored in a cookie for up to 90 days.
The identifier allows the Website to associate a returning browser with previous selections without requiring the visitor to create an account.
It does not directly identify a visitor by name, although it may constitute pseudonymous personal information.
How private gallery information is used
Information associated with private galleries is used to:
Maintain authorised gallery access.
Record and retrieve photograph selections.
Remember previously submitted preferences.
Allow feedback to be reviewed by the Website administrator.
Support the private photographic review process.
Private gallery selections and feedback are not used for visitor analytics, advertising, profiling or commercial tracking.
Deleting the relevant browser cookie may prevent the Website from recognising previous selections.
Gallery feedback and associated records are retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for the photographic review process and applicable operational or legal requirements.
8. Cookies and Browser Storage
RamblingMiles uses a limited number of first-party cookies and browser storage items to operate requested features, protect forms and accounts, maintain access to private galleries and remember choices you make. Cloudflare may also set security cookies on proxied Website traffic. This section describes the technologies identified in RMPxL and the relevant Cloudflare security features. Cookies are small pieces of information stored by your browser and sent to the relevant website when required. Browser local storage saves information on your device without automatically sending it with every request.
Not every visitor receives every cookie. Some are only created when you use a particular feature, such as logging in, submitting a form or accessing a private gallery. The technologies listed below are not used by RamblingMiles for advertising, commercial profiling or analysis of individual browsing activity.
First-party cookies used by website features
Cookie name | Purpose and when it is used | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Maintains a session for public account features, registration, sign-in, account recovery and features such as the guestbook or newsletter where session-based form protection is needed. | Browser-session cookie. The underlying session may expire sooner according to server settings. |
| Maintains contact-form security information and submission state, including protection against unauthorised form submissions. | Browser-session cookie. The underlying session may expire sooner according to server settings. |
| Maintains a secure session after you access a password-protected private client gallery. It also supports form security within that gallery. | Browser-session cookie, restricted to the private gallery area. Gallery authorisation may expire before the browser session ends. |
| Stores a randomly generated browser identifier after successful access to a private gallery. This allows previously submitted Like/Dislike selections and feedback to be associated with the same browser on a later visit, without requiring an account. It does not itself provide gallery access. | 90 days. |
| Where the platform's Core comment form is used, and you select its optional remember-details setting, this cookie remembers the name, email address and website address you supplied to pre-fill future comment forms. It is not required to submit a comment. | 30 days. |
The private gallery feedback identifier is pseudonymous. It is not intended to identify you by name, but it can link selections and feedback submitted from the same browser. Deleting this cookie may prevent the Website from recognising earlier selections, although feedback already submitted may remain in the gallery's records as described in Section 7.
Cloudflare security cookies and browser checks
Where Website traffic passes through Cloudflare's reverse proxy, Cloudflare may perform security checks to identify malicious or automated requests. These may include JavaScript Detections, which can insert a small script into HTML pages to assess browser and request signals. These checks are provided by Cloudflare, not by RMPxL. A browser's security settings may prevent the script from running, and not every visitor will receive the same security cookies.
Cookie name | Purpose and when it is used | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| May be set when Cloudflare Bot Fight Mode or Bot Management is active. Helps distinguish automated traffic from legitimate requests using security-related bot-detection signals. | Expires after 30 minutes of continuous inactivity. |
| May be set after Cloudflare JavaScript Detections or a security challenge. Records the result of a verification so Cloudflare can assess subsequent requests without unnecessarily repeating the check. | Depends on Cloudflare's challenge-passage settings. The default challenge-passage lifetime is 30 minutes; the configured period may differ. |
These cookies are associated with Cloudflare's security services and are not used by RamblingMiles for advertising, website analytics or cross-site visitor profiling. In addition to these cookies, Cloudflare may process IP addresses, browser and device characteristics, request metadata and security-check results as explained in Section 11.
Essential and proportionate security checks may qualify for an exemption from prior cookie consent under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR). This depends on the actual purpose and implementation of the technology. If a security technology is used for an additional purpose requiring consent, that use must be assessed separately. Cloudflare security checks are not controlled by RMPxL's optional Cookie preferences categories.
For more information about these technologies, see Cloudflare's cookie documentation and JavaScript Detections documentation.
Browser local storage
The following items are stored on your device rather than being sent automatically as cookies:
Storage key | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Remembers your selected light or dark appearance. Until you choose an appearance, the Website follows your device's colour-scheme preference. | Remains until changed or cleared from browser storage. The platform does not set an automatic expiry for this item. |
| Where optional services are configured and the Cookie Consent feature is active, records your choices, the consent configuration version and the date of your choice. This helps the Website honour your decision on later visits. | The saved choice is treated as valid for up to 180 days, or until the consent configuration changes. The stored item itself may remain on your device until it is replaced or you clear it. |
These storage items do not record the content of the pages or photographs you view. The consent preference item is not an analytics cookie.
Content management and administration
The separate RMPxL content management system may also set cookies when its own account and administration interfaces are used. These are not required merely to browse the public photography website. They include a deployment-configurable Laravel session cookie to maintain secure sign-in, XSRF-TOKEN for request-forgery protection, and an optional Laravel remember_web_ cookie when the user explicitly selects Remember me at Core sign-in. Under the platform's current defaults, the Core session lifetime is 120 minutes and the optional remember-me cookie can persist for up to 400 days; actual settings may differ on the deployed installation.
The administration interface also uses local storage keys beginning rmpxl.admin.accordion: and rmpxl:gizmos:area: to remember which configuration panels are expanded. These preferences remain until changed or cleared from the browser.
Optional third-party content and consent
Some optional features, such as externally supplied map resources, may involve a third-party provider receiving technical information about your request. Where consent is required for a provider's cookies or similar technologies, the content should not be activated before the necessary consent has been given.
Where the Cookie Consent feature is active, you can choose the available optional categories, reject them, or change your choices using the Cookie preferences control in the Website footer. Essential session and security functions are not disabled by rejecting optional services. If no optional categories are enabled, a consent banner may not be displayed.
RamblingMiles does not use website analytics, advertising cookies, behavioural advertising or cross-site visitor profiling. The existence of optional analytics functionality within RMPxL's software does not mean that it is enabled on RamblingMiles.
The Website also uses external infrastructure providers, including Hostinger and Cloudflare, as explained in Section 11. Cloudflare security cookies and browser checks are described separately above. Other provider cookies, where applicable, depend on the services and configuration in use and cannot always be determined solely by examining the RMPxL application code.
Managing cookies and browser storage
You can delete or block cookies and clear local storage using your browser's privacy and site-data settings. You can also change your chosen appearance using the Website's appearance controls. Clearing saved appearance information restores the use of your device's default colour preference.
Blocking essential session cookies may prevent account sign-in, protected forms or private galleries from working correctly. Clearing the private gallery feedback identifier can prevent earlier selections from being recognised on a return visit.
Where the Cookie Consent feature is available, you can revisit Cookie preferences to withdraw or change consent for optional technologies. Clearing your browser's site data may also remove saved consent choices, in which case you may be asked to choose again.
For further information about the personal information processed through these features, please see Sections 3, 5, 7, 11 and 14 of this Privacy Policy.
9. Maps, Walking Routes and Location Information
RamblingMiles publishes geographical information associated with photographs, places and walking routes.
This may include:
Place names and geographical descriptions.
General photograph locations.
Maps showing published photographs.
Walking routes and GPX tracks.
Route distances and elevation profiles.
This information forms part of the published photographic and editorial content. It does not, by itself, involve collecting visitors' geographical locations.
Optional browser location
Certain features may allow you to find photographs or places near your current location.
If you choose to use such a feature, your browser may request permission to access your device's location.
Location access is optional.
You can browse the Website without allowing access to your device's location.
Where permission is granted, location information may be processed to identify relevant nearby content.
Location information obtained for this purpose is not intended to be used for advertising, profiling or monitoring your movements.
You can withdraw browser location permission through your browser or device settings.
Mapping services
RamblingMiles favours privacy-conscious mapping technologies, including mapping based on OpenStreetMap.
Depending on the mapping service and its configuration, external providers may receive technical information such as your IP address and requested map resources.
Where a mapping service requires consent as third-party content, the Website's consent controls will be used before that service is activated.
Published GPX routes
Walking routes published on RamblingMiles may include downloadable GPX files.
The Website takes steps to minimise unnecessary personal information in published route data, including reducing the precision of sensitive starting and finishing locations where supported.
However, GPX files inherently contain geographical information, and published routes may still reveal locations visited.
Visitors downloading GPX files should be aware that the information may be stored on their own devices or shared with third-party mapping applications.
10. Email Correspondence
If you contact RamblingMiles by email, we may collect:
Your name, where provided.
Your email address.
The contents of your message.
Any additional information you voluntarily include.
This information is used only to:
Respond to your enquiry.
Communicate with you where requested.
Maintain correspondence where reasonably necessary.
Comply with applicable legal obligations.
Email correspondence is not automatically added to a mailing list or used for marketing purposes.
Correspondence is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for its original purpose or to comply with legal requirements.
11. Hosting and Third-Party Service Providers
RamblingMiles uses external service providers to operate and maintain the Website.
Hostinger
The Website is hosted using services provided by Hostinger.
The primary website server is located in the United Kingdom.
Hostinger may process technical information and website data as necessary to provide:
Website hosting.
Server operation and maintenance.
Infrastructure security.
Automated backups and disaster recovery.
Technical support and troubleshooting.
This may include IP addresses, server logs, website files, database records and information required to maintain the hosting environment.
Backup storage
Hostinger's automated website backups are stored in Germany.
These backups may contain copies of website files and database information, including personal information associated with registered accounts, comments and private gallery features.
Backups are created automatically approximately every 24 hours and retained under a seven-day rolling retention policy.
The oldest backup is automatically removed as newer backups are created.
Further information about backup retention and deletion is provided in Section 14.
Cloudflare
RamblingMiles uses Cloudflare for Domain Name System (DNS) management and selected website security and traffic management services.
Some DNS records are configured to route website traffic through Cloudflare's network, while others operate in DNS-only mode.
Where Cloudflare acts as a reverse proxy, it processes website requests before forwarding them to the Website's hosting server in the United Kingdom. DNS-only records do not route the corresponding website requests through Cloudflare's reverse proxy.
Depending on the request and services involved, Cloudflare may process technical information including:
Visitor IP addresses.
Browser and connection information.
Requested URLs and associated request metadata.
DNS-related information.
Security-related information necessary to identify and prevent malicious traffic.
This processing supports DNS resolution, website availability, network security, protection against malicious activity and reliable delivery of Website content.
For proxied HTML pages, Cloudflare may inject JavaScript-based bot-detection code to help distinguish automated requests from legitimate visitors. Such checks can assess technical browser signals and whether security verification has succeeded. Depending on the protection enabled and the visitor's interaction with it, Cloudflare may set security cookies including __cf_bm and cf_clearance, as detailed in Section 8. These checks are not visitor analytics operated by RamblingMiles. A browser's Content Security Policy or other security restrictions may block the injected code, so the check or associated cookie will not necessarily complete on every visit.
Cloudflare operates an international network, so some technical information may be processed outside the United Kingdom, subject to applicable data protection requirements. Cloudflare states that its cookie data may, by default, be processed in data centres in the United States, subject to its applicable international transfer arrangements.
RamblingMiles does not use Cloudflare for visitor analytics, behavioural advertising or commercial profiling.
Further information is available in Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
Other service providers
Additional providers may process limited information where necessary to support specific Website functionality, such as email delivery or external mapping resources.
The information processed depends on the particular service and its configuration.
Service providers may act as data processors on behalf of RamblingMiles or as independent controllers, depending on their services and the circumstances.
We do not sell or rent personal information to third parties.
Information may also be disclosed where required by law or where necessary and proportionate to protect the security and integrity of the Website.
12. International Data Transfers
RamblingMiles' primary website server is located in the United Kingdom, while automated website backups are stored in Germany.
Germany is a member of the European Union and is covered by the United Kingdom's data protection adequacy regulations.
This means that personal information transferred from the United Kingdom to Germany can benefit from the applicable adequacy framework without requiring additional international transfer safeguards solely because of the destination.
Cloudflare operates an international network, and technical information associated with DNS resolution, proxied website requests, security cookies and automated bot detection may be processed in countries outside the United Kingdom, including the United States.
Some other infrastructure or service providers may also operate internationally.
Where personal information is transferred to other countries, applicable UK data protection requirements must be met.
Where required, transfers will be covered by applicable adequacy regulations, appropriate safeguards or another lawful transfer mechanism.
You may contact us to request further information about relevant international processing arrangements.
13. Website Security
RamblingMiles uses HTTPS encryption to help protect information transmitted between your browser and the Website.
The RMPxL platform incorporates security measures designed to protect personal information and prevent unauthorised access.
These include, where applicable:
Secure authentication mechanisms.
Password hashing.
Email verification.
Optional multi-factor authentication and passkeys.
Access controls and account permissions.
Session protection.
Login attempt restrictions.
Administrative security controls.
Security monitoring and audit records.
Cloudflare security checks and automated-traffic protections for proxied website requests.
Access to personal information is restricted according to operational and security requirements.
Reasonable technical and organisational measures are used to protect information against unauthorised access, loss, alteration, disclosure or misuse.
However, no method of internet communication or electronic storage can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
14. Data Retention
Personal information is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected.
Retention periods depend on the information involved, the features used and any applicable legal or security requirements.
Account information
Account information is generally retained while an account remains active.
Following an account deletion request, associated information will be removed or anonymised where appropriate, subject to any necessary legal or security retention.
Comments
Published comments may remain available while the associated content is published.
Comments may be removed or anonymised where appropriate following a valid request.
Private gallery information
Private gallery selections and feedback are retained for as long as reasonably necessary to support the relevant photographic review process.
Browser identifiers used to remember selections may remain available for up to 90 days.
Associated feedback records may be retained separately for the duration of the relevant gallery review and any applicable operational or legal requirements.
Email correspondence
Emails and related correspondence are retained only for as long as reasonably necessary to respond to enquiries or meet applicable obligations.
Technical and security logs
Technical information and security records are retained according to operational, security and legal requirements.
Records that are no longer needed are deleted or anonymised where reasonably practicable.
Cookies and preferences
Cookies and browser storage remain available according to their configured lifetimes or until removed through available controls or browser settings.
Automated website backups
RamblingMiles uses Hostinger's automated backup service to protect against accidental data loss, technical failures and other incidents requiring website restoration.
The backup arrangements are as follows:
Backup frequency: Automatically every 24 hours.
Information backed up: Website files and databases.
Backup location: Germany.
Retention period: Seven days.
Backup rotation: The oldest snapshot is automatically deleted as the rolling backup cycle progresses.
Hostinger does not provide the ability to manually delete individual automated backup snapshots under this arrangement.
When personal information is deleted from the active Website following a valid request, copies may therefore remain temporarily within existing automated backups.
These copies are retained for backup and disaster recovery purposes and are not used for ordinary Website operations or unrelated processing.
Deleted information remaining in backup storage is removed through the normal seven-day backup rotation.
If a backup must be restored before the relevant snapshot has expired, appropriate steps will be taken to ensure that information previously deleted in response to a valid request is not unnecessarily reintroduced into active processing.
Secure deletion
When personal information is no longer required, it will be securely deleted or anonymised from active systems where reasonably practicable and in accordance with applicable legal requirements.
Information remaining in automated backups will be subject to the retention and rotation arrangements described above.
15. Your Data Protection Rights
Under UK GDPR and applicable UK data protection legislation, you may have the right to:
Access: Request a copy of the personal information held about you.
Rectification: Request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information.
Erasure: Request deletion of personal information where appropriate.
Restriction: Request that certain processing is restricted.
Objection: Object to processing based on legitimate interests.
Data portability: Request transfer of eligible personal information where the relevant legal conditions apply.
Withdrawal of consent: Withdraw consent at any time where processing relies on consent.
These rights are subject to applicable legal conditions and exceptions.
We do not use personal information to make solely automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects on visitors.
To exercise your rights, please contact hello@ramblingmiles.com.
We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests to ensure that personal information is not disclosed to an unauthorised person.
Requests will be handled in accordance with applicable UK data protection requirements, normally within one calendar month, subject to lawful extensions where appropriate.
16. Data Protection Complaints
If you have concerns about how RamblingMiles collects, uses, stores or protects your personal information, you may make a data protection complaint.
Please contact:
Miles Wolstenholme
Email: hello@ramblingmiles.com
Please include sufficient information to explain your concern and allow it to be investigated.
We will:
Acknowledge receipt of your complaint within 30 days.
Investigate the matter appropriately and without undue delay.
Request further information where reasonably necessary.
Keep you informed of relevant progress.
Communicate the outcome without undue delay.
You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's independent data protection regulator.
Further information is available at ico.org.uk.
17. Links to External Websites
RamblingMiles contains links to external websites, including social media profiles, photographic resources and other websites of interest.
Selecting an external link takes you to a website operated independently of RamblingMiles.
These websites may collect or process information under their own privacy policies and terms of use.
RamblingMiles has no control over, and accepts no responsibility for, the privacy practices or content of external websites.
We encourage visitors to review the privacy information provided by any external services they choose to use.
18. Children's Privacy
RamblingMiles is a personal photography website intended for a general audience and is not specifically designed or directed towards children.
We do not knowingly solicit unnecessary personal information from children.
If you believe that a child has provided personal information through the Website and would like that information reviewed or removed, please contact us.
