A Tree Framed and Silhouetted by the Setting Sun
By Miles ·
A lone tree stands silhouetted against the setting sun, while deep red and orange clouds turn the evening sky into a blaze of colour.
There are evenings when the setting sun does something quite extraordinary, transforming an otherwise familiar landscape into a spectacular display of colour and light.
On this particular May evening, the sky was ablaze with deep reds, fiery oranges and glowing amber, as layers of dark cloud stretched across the horizon.
As the sun sank towards the distant treetops, a solitary tree stood silhouetted against its enormous golden disc. Its bare branches spread across the brilliant light, creating a striking contrast between the delicate natural form of the tree and the intensity of the sunset behind it.
I was particularly drawn to the way the tree appeared almost perfectly framed by the setting sun. The surrounding clouds added another dimension, with dark bands cutting across the fiery sky and creating a wonderful sense of drama.
By using a long telephoto lens, I was able to concentrate on the distant horizon, making the sun appear especially prominent behind the silhouetted trees.
What fascinates me about sunsets is how quickly they change. The colours, shapes and patterns of the clouds can shift completely in just a few moments, and the most extraordinary displays are often over almost as soon as they begin.
For me, this photograph captures one of those fleeting moments when everything seems to come together. A solitary tree, a setting sun and a sky filled with extraordinary colour.
Sometimes the simplest compositions make the strongest photographs.
