Our Commitment to Accessibility

RamblingMiles is committed to making this website as accessible and inclusive as possible, so that everyone can explore its photography, articles and walking experiences, regardless of ability or the technology they use.

I believe that the natural world should be accessible to everyone, and I want that principle to extend to how my photographs and experiences are shared online.

Accessibility is an ongoing consideration in the design, development and maintenance of RamblingMiles.

Accessibility Standards

This website is developed with reference to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, with the aim of achieving Level AA accessibility.

These internationally recognised guidelines help make websites more accessible to people with visual, hearing, physical and cognitive disabilities.

Although accessibility is considered throughout development, the website has not yet been confirmed as fully compliant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Some features may require further testing or improvement.

Making the Website Accessible

RamblingMiles aims to provide an experience that is accessible across different devices, browsers and assistive technologies.

Particular attention is given to:

  • Clear navigation: Providing a logical structure, descriptive headings and understandable navigation.

  • Keyboard accessibility: Making interactive elements usable without relying solely on a mouse or touchscreen.

  • Readable content: Using clear typography, appropriate text sizes, sufficient colour contrast and layouts that adapt to different screen sizes.

  • Photograph descriptions: Providing meaningful alternative text for photographs wherever appropriate, particularly where images communicate important information.

  • Screen reader compatibility: Using semantic page structures and accessible labels to support assistive technologies.

  • Responsive design: Supporting desktop computers, tablets and mobile devices.

  • Visual accessibility: Considering the needs of visitors who enlarge text, adjust display settings or prefer reduced motion.

These are design objectives rather than a declaration that every feature has passed accessibility testing.

Photography and Visual Content

Photography is central to RamblingMiles, and I recognise that visual content can present challenges for visitors with visual impairments.

Where appropriate, photographs are accompanied by alternative text intended to communicate their subject or purpose.

However, a short description cannot always convey the atmosphere, detail or visual qualities of a photograph.

If you would like a more detailed description of a particular photograph, please get in touch.

Maps, Walking Routes and Interactive Features

Some areas of RamblingMiles use interactive features, including photograph galleries, maps, GPX walking routes and elevation profiles.

These features may not provide an equivalent experience for every visitor, particularly those using screen readers or keyboard-only navigation.

I aim to provide supporting written information wherever practical and to improve the accessibility of these features as the website develops.

If you cannot access particular route information, geographical details or other interactive content, please contact me so that I can explore an alternative way of providing the information.

Known Limitations

Despite ongoing efforts, some parts of the website may not yet be fully accessible.

Potential limitations include:

  • Interactive maps and route visualisations that depend on visual or pointer-based interaction.

  • Photograph galleries and lightboxes that may behave differently with certain assistive technologies.

  • Photographs for which alternative text may not fully communicate the visual content.

  • Third-party components or externally provided content that may have accessibility limitations.

These areas will continue to be reviewed and improved where reasonably practicable.

Reporting an Accessibility Problem

If you experience difficulty accessing any part of RamblingMiles, encounter an accessibility barrier or have suggestions for improvement, I would welcome your feedback.

Please use the website's Contact Page to get in touch.

It would be helpful if you could include:

  • The page or feature causing difficulty.

  • A brief description of the problem.

  • The browser, device or assistive technology you were using, if relevant.

  • Whether you would like the information provided in an alternative format.

I will consider accessibility feedback carefully and endeavour to respond and address reasonable requests as soon as practicable.

Ongoing Improvements

Accessibility is not a one-off exercise. As RamblingMiles develops and new features are introduced, I intend to review accessibility, identify barriers and make improvements wherever possible.

This statement will be updated to reflect significant changes, accessibility testing and improvements to the website.

My aim is to ensure that RamblingMiles remains a welcoming place for everyone who enjoys photography, nature and exploring the landscapes around us.
