Sunlit granite stacks rise above the open moor at Belstone Tor, with scattered boulders, distant tors and a pale moon in the summer sky.

High on the northern edge of Dartmoor, the weathered granite outcrops of Belstone Tor rise above the surrounding moorland, their distinctive shapes sculpted by countless years of exposure to the elements.

The great stacks of granite, with their deep cracks and rounded edges, are characteristic of Dartmoor's rugged landscape. Some of the boulders appear almost deliberately arranged, piled one upon another to form striking natural structures that stand out against the open sky.

Photographed in June 2013, I was drawn to the warm sunlight falling across the rocks, bringing out the textures and subtle colours of the granite. The surrounding slopes were covered in summer grasses and low-growing vegetation, their rich greens providing a lovely contrast to the weathered stone.

Beyond the main outcrop, smaller granite formations punctuate the hillside, while the open moorland stretches towards the distant horizon. High above, a pale moon hangs in the blue sky, a small detail that adds something unexpected to the scene.

One of the pleasures of exploring Dartmoor is discovering the extraordinary variety of shapes formed by its granite tors. From a distance they can appear as simple rocky landmarks, but up close their intricate formations reveal a fascinating landscape of cracks, ledges and enormous weather-worn boulders.

Belstone Tor is a wonderful example of this natural character, a place where the ancient granite and wide-open moorland come together to create a landscape that feels unmistakably Dartmoor.
