Bluebells in Meldon Woods
By Miles ·
A winding woodland path leads through carpets of spring bluebells in Meldon Woods, near Okehampton, as dappled sunlight filters through the fresh green canopy.
Every spring, the ancient woodland of Meldon Woods, near Okehampton on the northern edge of Dartmoor, undergoes a remarkable transformation as thousands of bluebells emerge beneath the trees.
For a few short weeks, the woodland floor becomes a beautiful carpet of violet-blue flowers, contrasting with the fresh greens of the emerging leaves and the moss-covered trunks of the old trees.
A narrow, winding footpath leads through the heart of the woodland, disappearing into the trees as patches of spring sunshine filter through the canopy. The gentle play of light and shadow brings out the colours of the bluebells and gives the woodland a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.
Photographed in May 2014, this scene captures one of the quieter pleasures of exploring Dartmoor. Away from the exposed tors and open moorland, places like Meldon Woods offer a different kind of beauty, one that changes with the seasons and rewards those who take the time to wander a little further.
It is a fleeting spectacle, but one that makes a springtime walk through these woods particularly memorable.
