Just the Two of Us
By Miles ·
Two figures stand together on a Cornish beach at sunset, silhouetted against the glowing sky as the last light reflects in a tidal pool.
As the sun sinks towards the Atlantic horizon, two figures stand quietly together at the water's edge, watching the last of the day's light fade across the sea.
The sky is filled with soft shades of peach, amber and gold, gradually giving way to the cooler blues of the approaching evening. Delicate clouds stretch overhead, catching the warm light, while gentle waves break along the shore.
Photographed on the north Cornish coast in May 2020, I was drawn to the simplicity of the scene. The two figures, silhouetted against the glowing horizon, provide a small but unmistakable focal point within the vast expanse of sea and sky.
In the foreground, a shallow pool of water reflects the warm colours above, creating a second, softer version of the sunset. The dark strip of sand separating the pool from the sea adds depth to the composition, while the reflection brings a wonderful sense of stillness.
What particularly appeals to me about this photograph is the quiet connection between the two people. Their identities are unimportant to the scene. It is simply a shared moment, standing side by side as another day draws to a close.
For me, it captures something of the simple pleasure of being beside the sea, where even an ordinary evening can become a moment worth remembering.
