Morning has Broken
By Miles ·
Morning sunlight streams through the tall trees of Abbeyford Woods near Brightley, catching the ferns and bracken beneath the dark canopy.
In Abbeyford Woods, near the little hamlet of Brightley, the tall conifers stand close together, keeping much of the forest floor in shadow. But on this autumn morning, the low sun was finding gaps in the canopy, sending broad shafts of golden light through the trees.
A little lingering haze made the sunbeams visible, illuminating patches of bracken and young saplings amongst the darker woodland. The straight trunks stood like columns, some catching the sunlight while others remained almost completely in silhouette.
The contrast makes scenes like this so appealing. The woodland can feel quite enclosed beneath the dense canopy, yet a few shafts of sunlight suddenly reveal its depth, picking out details that might otherwise go unnoticed. No need to search for a particular subject. The trees, the faint haze and the morning light had already arranged themselves into something worth photographing.
A little later, as the sun climbed higher and the haze disappeared, the scene would have looked quite different. Sometimes the early start is worth it!
