Golden morning sunlight filters through the tall conifers of Abbeyford Woods near Okehampton, illuminating ferns and the moss-covered woodland floor.

There is something rather special about the way morning sunlight finds its way through a woodland canopy, particularly when a little lingering moisture in the air makes the individual beams visible.

On this October morning in Abbeyford Woods, near Okehampton, shafts of golden sunlight streamed between the tall conifers, illuminating the ferns and moss-covered woodland floor beneath.

The straight trunks of the trees rise into the canopy, their dark silhouettes contrasting with the soft light filtering through the branches. Long shadows stretch across the forest floor, while patches of brilliant green foliage catch the sunlight against the darker woodland beyond.

Photographed in October 2009, this was one of those quiet moments when the ordinary beauty of a woodland becomes something quite remarkable. The faint haze hanging between the trees revealed the individual sunbeams, creating a wonderful sense of depth and atmosphere.

It's scenes like this that remind me why I enjoy wandering through familiar woodlands. You never quite know what the changing light will reveal, and sometimes the simplest moments leave the most lasting impression.
