Golden evening light breaks through a gap in dark storm clouds, illuminating their edges and revealing a dramatic opening in the sky.

There are moments when the sky puts on a display that seems almost too extraordinary to be real.

On this particular May evening, great banks of dark storm clouds filled the sky, their heavy, brooding shapes creating a dramatic backdrop. Then, through a break in the clouds, warm golden sunlight began to emerge, illuminating their edges and revealing a beautiful opening in the gathering darkness.

The contrast was remarkable. Deep blue-grey clouds surrounded a glowing patch of amber and gold, while faint shafts of sunlight spread outwards through the gaps, creating an almost heavenly appearance.

There was no need for a landscape or a familiar landmark to complete the scene. The sky itself provided all the drama, with the changing light revealing new shapes and patterns amongst the clouds.

One of the things I enjoy most about photographing the natural world is its unpredictability. Sometimes you can spend hours searching for the right conditions, while on other occasions something remarkable simply happens above your head.

For me, this was one of those moments. A fleeting glimpse of golden light amongst the storm clouds, creating a scene that seemed almost like a window into another world.

And for a brief moment, it really did feel as though the heavens were opening.
