Sunlight catches a wooden gate between old stone walls near Meldon, while a shadowy holloway winds away beneath bare branches.

An old wooden gate, a pair of weathered stone walls and a narrow track disappearing beneath the trees. There's nothing particularly remarkable about the individual elements, yet together they make an inviting little woodland scene.

Near Meldon, a simple timber gate marks the entrance to a deeply sunken lane, its route winding between steep banks and beneath a tangled canopy of branches.

The early spring sunshine catches the pale wood of the gate, making it stand out against the darker stones and shadowy woodland beyond. Behind it, the track climbs gently into the trees, where the bare branches throw long, uneven shadows across the ground.

I particularly like the contrast between the straight, carefully constructed lines of the gate and the untidy shapes of the trees surrounding it. The old stone walls add another layer of texture, their rough surfaces reflecting the light in quite a different way.

There are countless gates like this scattered across the countryside, many guarding tracks that have been used for generations. Most are passed without a second glance.

This one caught my attention because of the light and the way the lane seemed to disappear into the trees.

It makes you wonder what's waiting further along the path.
