The Sun and the Signal

A brilliant March sun sinks beside a radio mast near Okehampton, its golden disc framed by fiery cloud above a dark Devon ridge.

A huge golden sun hangs just above the Devon countryside, its brilliant disc partly obscured by thin bands of cloud. Beside it, a solitary communications mast stands on the distant ridge, looking almost insignificant against the spectacle unfolding behind it.

The evening sky is filled with rich oranges, reds and muted purples, with the clouds forming broad, sweeping layers around the setting sun. A few tiny birds are just visible against the brighter sky, adding another small detail to an already striking scene.

There's something rather curious about the contrast between the two main subjects. The mast, with its intricate arrangement of aerials and metal framework, represents our modern world of technology and communication. Alongside it sits the sun, an immense natural presence that rather puts everything else into perspective.

The long telephoto view brings the distant horizon and setting sun together, exaggerating their apparent closeness and creating a composition that feels almost surreal.

I've photographed this particular skyline near Okehampton on several occasions, and it's remarkable how differently it can appear depending on the weather and time of year.

Sometimes it's the clouds that steal the show. On this March evening, there was little doubt about which way to point the camera.
