Sunlight streams between tall conifers, illuminating the woodland floor and casting long shadows in this atmospheric black-and-white photograph.

There is something wonderfully peaceful about walking through a quiet woodland when the sunlight begins to find its way between the trees.

On this November morning in Abbeyford Woods, near Okehampton, shafts of soft sunlight filtered through the tall conifers, illuminating the smaller trees growing beneath the canopy. Long shadows stretched across the forest floor, while the dark, straight trunks stood in sharp contrast to the delicate branches catching the light.

Photographed in November 2013, I was drawn to the way the sunlight transformed this otherwise shaded corner of the woodland. The gentle haze between the trees softened the distant background, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere.

I chose black and white to concentrate attention on the interplay of light and shadow, the strong vertical lines of the trees and the subtle textures of the woodland floor.

For me, woodland photography is often about noticing these fleeting moments. A familiar stretch of forest can take on an entirely different character when the light changes, revealing details and patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Sometimes, the most rewarding photographs are simply a matter of following the light.
