Sea pinks colour the cliffs above Port Quin, where waves meet the rocks below Doyden Castle on a sunlit stretch of the north Cornish coast.

Along the rugged north Cornish coast, the arrival of spring brings a wonderful splash of colour as sea pinks begin to flower across the grassy clifftops.

Overlooking the sheltered inlet of Port Quin, these delicate pink flowers spread across the slopes, contrasting beautifully with the dark, jagged rocks and the turquoise waters of the Atlantic below. Beyond the rocky shoreline, the coastline curves towards Doyden Point, where the distinctive little tower of Doyden Castle stands on the headland.

Despite its name, Doyden Castle was never a defensive stronghold. Built in the early nineteenth century by Samuel Symons, a wealthy businessman from Wadebridge, it was originally intended as a private retreat where he could entertain his friends. Today, the castellated Gothic folly is owned by the National Trust and has been converted into an unusual holiday cottage.

Photographed in May 2023, I was particularly drawn to the contrast between the colourful wildflowers and the rugged coastal scenery. The sea pinks provide a beautiful foreground, while the rocky headland and distant cliffs lead the eye along this dramatic stretch of coastline.

The clear blue water, white surf breaking against the rocks and fresh greens of the clifftop grassland give the scene a wonderful sense of early summer.

For me, this photograph captures much of what makes the Cornish coast so appealing. Wildflowers growing on exposed cliffs, the ever-changing colours of the sea and the occasional historic building tucked into the landscape, each adding something to the character of this remarkable coastline.
