Footprints lead from the shadow of a sea cave onto Holywell Bay's golden sands, with the twin Gull Rocks rising beyond the Atlantic surf.

There is something rather special about looking out towards the sea from the darkness of a coastal cave, where the familiar landscape beyond takes on an entirely different character.

At Holywell Bay, on Cornwall's rugged northern coast, a large opening in the rock frames a beautiful view of the sandy beach, the turquoise Atlantic and the distinctive twin peaks of Gull Rocks rising from the water offshore.

From deep within the cave, a trail of footprints leads across the smooth sand towards the daylight. The rough, weathered rock curves overhead, forming a natural arch that separates the cool shadows of the cave from the bright, open landscape beyond.

Photographed in May 2023, I was particularly drawn to this contrast between darkness and light. The intricate textures and colours of the cave walls provide a striking frame, while the pale sand, blue sea and clear sky create a wonderful sense of space and freedom.

The footprints add a quiet human element to the scene, suggesting that someone has recently passed through, although the beach itself appears wonderfully peaceful.

For me, this photograph captures one of the pleasures of exploring the Cornish coastline. Sometimes the most memorable views aren't found looking out from the clifftops, but from the quieter, hidden places discovered along the shore.

And occasionally, stepping out of the shadows reveals a view that makes you stop and look a little longer.
