Shadows in Halstock Woods
By Miles ·
A narrow path winds through Halstock Woods, where twisted oak branches cast patterned shadows across the rocky floor of the East Okement Valley.
Tucked away in the wooded valleys near Okehampton, Halstock Woods is one of those quieter corners of Dartmoor where the landscape feels a world away from the exposed tors and open moorland above.
Part of the ancient woodland bordering the East Okement Valley, it is a place of twisted oak trees, steep rocky banks and narrow paths winding through the trees.
On one side, the woodland falls away amongst scattered rocks and old trees, while on the other, a steep bank rises above the path, its exposed stone and weathered roots catching the sunlight.
Although the trees were still largely bare, there was a wonderful richness to the scene. The rough textures of the bark, the moss-covered rocks and the fallen leaves created a landscape full of small details, each revealed by the changing light.
I chose black and white to concentrate on those textures and the strong patterns created by the trees. Without the distraction of colour, the twisting branches, rugged stone and alternating bands of sunlight and shadow become the defining features of the photograph.
What I particularly enjoy about places like Halstock Woods is their slightly untamed character. The paths follow the natural contours of the valley, winding between old trees and rocky outcrops, with something different to discover around almost every bend.
For me, this photograph captures the quieter side of Dartmoor. A simple woodland path, a little sunlight filtering through the trees and the pleasure of wandering through a landscape that seems largely unchanged by the passing years.
