West Mill Tor in Winter
By Miles ·
Snow-dusted granite outcrops frame the low winter sun at West Mill Tor, with pale moorland stretching into the distance beneath a clear blue sky.
Winter brings a very different character to Dartmoor, particularly when a covering of snow transforms the familiar granite tors and open moorland into a landscape of light and shadow.
High on West Mill Tor, near Okehampton, the great stacks of weathered granite stand amongst scattered boulders and snow-covered slopes. Their dark, rugged surfaces contrast beautifully with the white snow resting on their ledges and in the deep crevices between the rocks.
Photographed in January 2021, I was drawn to a narrow opening between two imposing granite formations. Beyond them, the winter sunshine illuminated the open moorland, while the brilliant sun created a striking starburst against the clear blue sky.
The low winter light picked out the textures of the rocks and cast deep shadows across the snow, revealing the intricate shapes and weathered surfaces of the granite. Through the gap, the gently rolling moorland stretched into the distance, its familiar grasses and rocky ground softened beneath a covering of white.
There is something particularly rewarding about exploring Dartmoor in these conditions. The snow changes the appearance of even the most familiar places, emphasising the shapes of the landscape and bringing a wonderful clarity to the winter light.
For me, this photograph captures that contrast between the rugged, enduring granite and the fleeting beauty of a snowy winter day. A familiar Dartmoor scene, transformed by the season.
