Sunset Ripples

Fine ripples of cloud glow gold and orange above a dark Devon ridge, with a lone communications mast silhouetted against the fading sunset.

As the last of the daylight slips away, the sky above the Devon countryside becomes a wash of gold, amber and burnt orange.

Long, delicate ripples of cloud stretch across the evening sky, catching the fading sunlight and creating gentle waves of colour. The brightest glow sits just above the horizon, gradually giving way to softer, more subdued tones higher overhead.

Below, the rolling countryside has already disappeared into shadow. Only the silhouettes of distant trees and a solitary communications mast remain visible against the glowing sky.

It's a familiar view near Okehampton, but the changing light never seems to produce quite the same result twice. Even the most ordinary clouds can become something worth stopping to admire when the sun catches them at just the right angle.

I rather like the simplicity of this scene. There's no spectacular landmark or elaborate foreground, just the gentle contours of the landscape and an evening sky stretching away into the distance.

A peaceful end to a March day, with the promise of spring not too far away.
