A narrow woodland trail winds between carpets of bluebells in Meldon Woods, where spring sunshine catches the flowers beneath the trees.

Tucked away in Meldon Woods, near Okehampton on the northern edge of Dartmoor, a narrow woodland path winds its way through a wonderful carpet of spring bluebells.

The woodland is a beautiful mixture of light and shadow. Beneath the dense canopy, thousands of violet-blue flowers spread across the forest floor, their delicate colours contrasting with the fresh green foliage and the deep, moss-covered trunks of the surrounding trees.

Here and there, sunlight finds its way through the branches, illuminating patches of bluebells and picking out the twisting shapes of the older trees. The narrow trail provides a natural route through the scene, inviting the eye to wander deeper into the woodland.

Photographed in June 2013, I was particularly drawn to the contrast between the sunlit flowers and the darker, more sheltered areas of the wood. Rather than showing the bluebells in isolation, I wanted to capture something of the experience of walking amongst them, surrounded by trees and the rich colours of late spring.

For me, these quieter woodland paths are amongst the most rewarding places to explore. There is always something new to notice, whether it's the changing light, the intricate shapes of the trees or the fleeting beauty of a woodland carpeted in bluebells.

It's a scene that captures one of the simple pleasures of the countryside: following a little path and seeing where it leads.
